Why the CEO Should Report to the CHRO

Here’s what every CHRO should do tomorrow: “Go to the CEO, and say ‘guess what’ we’re changing the org chart. I’m in charge now, and you report to me.”

That’s the (mostly) tongue-in-cheek assignment Kristen Harcourt gave her DisruptHR Toronto audience, at the end of her 5 minutes on how HR can become “as important, or more important than the CEO.”

Then a senior consultant at The McQuaig Institute and now an independent consultant and coach, Harcourt was making the point that HR’s role needs to change. To become the trusted business partner HR should be will require the people in HR to change, she said.

HR must develop a deep understanding of the business and the market in order to better meet the needs of the organization. In this 5 minute video, she lays out a plan for how HR professionals can do that.
