    Data mining is essential but the right data, please.  Moneyball has important lessons – we need to get it right.  Skills are moderately important – only moderately.  Not because I think so, but because that’s a scientific fact. It’s even true in baseball, an endeavor we would think of as intensively skill-based.  Baseball and certainly business are competency-driven. And competencies won’t usually be sitting comfortably in your HR data trove right now. We need to measure people and jobs in competency and other relevant terms.  Then we will have the data to mine that means something. Using more of what we know from someone’s resume or from a typical job requisition won’t get us anywhere.
