DISRUPT is an information exchange designed to energize, inform and empower people in the HR field.

Founded by Disrupt's CEO Jennifer McClure, events are organized by volunteer teams working with Disrupt staff who assist in the planning. Events have a maximum of 14 speakers, who get 5 minutes and no more than 20 slides for their presentation.

Competency Modeling Is As Dated As A Jeans Jacket

What do competency models and jean jackets have in common? They both belong in the nineties, says Christy Panico. She’s assessment manager at Pinsight, a Colorado company that provides online job simulations. In her presentation at DisruptHr Denver in 2015, she challenged the use of competency models as “static and inflexible.” “Does your…

Why the CEO Should Report to the CHRO

Here’s what every CHRO should do tomorrow: “Go to the CEO, and say ‘guess what’ we’re changing the org chart. I’m in charge now, and you report to me.” That’s the (mostly) tongue-in-cheek assignment Kristen Harcourt gave her DisruptHR Toronto audience, at the end of her 5 minutes on how HR can become…

Want That Seat at the Table? Then Take It!

Instead of hoping for an invitation, HR should crash the party and take a seat at the grown-ups’ table. That’s the message Ed Baldwin, president of HRO Partners, delivered at last spring’s DisruptHR Denver meeting. If you think that’s tough talk, just listen as he acts out a conversation between a CEO and…

Healthcare Costs and the Collision With Employee Rights

Observing that the U.S. healthcare has been rising at almost twice the rate of the national economy, Tim Coan told an audience of HR professionals, “This is simply not sustainable.” But the question is, ‘What have we done about it’.” Speaking at a DisruptHR meeting in Denver last year, Coan said it is…

How a Small Employer Launched a Big Wellness Program (and How You Can Do the Same)

Wellness isn’t just for big companies. Small and mid-size employers  may not be able to afford the kinds of programs their bigger counterparts offer, but that doesn’t mean do nothing. In this five-minute DisruptHR presentation, Kristin Van Horn, describes what even the smallest companies can do. When she delivered her presentation, Van Horn…

Hack Your Application Process to Find the Talent You Want

Does your online application process look like all the others? It does if you’ve accepted the conventional wisdom, which is, says Carl Schmidt, CTO and co-founder of Unbounce, “Make this easy. Make this simple. Make this streamlined. Do not put up barriers. Welcome people as quickly as you can into that process.” What’s…

Do HR Certifications Have Any Value?

“Raise your hand if you have your CHRP,” Rocky Ozaki directs his audience of HR professionals at a DisruptHR meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia. “And keep it up if you actually believe it offers business value. Keep it up even longer if you think it’s preparing you for the future workplace and the…

Focus On Results Not Hours In the Seat

The S&P 1500 has more CEOs named John than women CEOs. That telling statistic framed the DisruptHR talk by Tami Forman on how employers can go about “Making Space for Moms.” Despite the title, it would be a mistake to think Forman, executive director at Path Forward, was only about working mothers and…

When Feedback Is Needed, Don’t Be NICE

One of the problems we have in HR, says Jim Smith, is that HR people are NICE. He spelled it out in capitals and explained that what it really means is, “Nothing Inside of me Cares Enough to tell you the truth.” “We don’t want to make waves. We want everybody to be…

The “Liquid Leadership” That Change Management Demands

“Leading change is a critical business capability,” agree 95% of business leaders and others. Yet, says  Tyler Durham, “Change is usually over-managed and under-led.” No wonder then, that in three-quarters of the organizations in the survey, “They’re actually discussing the fact that there’s change fatigue in the organization,” adds Durham, partner and president…
