According to a new survey by ManpowerGroup’s own Right Management, an unprecedented 86 percent of U.S. employees say they intend to look for a new job in 2013. Only 5 percent say they intend to stay in their current position.
What’s driving all this discontent? Right Management CEO Owen Sullivan offers some interesting explanations:
- Booming stress: “The constant drumbeat of downsizing coupled with the expectation to do more with less has put an added amount of stress on workers.”
- Flight cognition: Employees may be showing “a wish to depart a situation, not necessarily an indicator of actual employee turnover.”
- The continuous job hunt: “With so many job boards and constant social networking workers appear to have convinced themselves that they’re truly job hunting when all they’re doing is cruising the Internet. The Internet job boards are sort of like window shopping, something to do during a down moment.”
An additional problem could be that — according to another Right Management survey – only 12 percent of companies have a fully implemented talent management strategy in place. Check out this infographic for more.
How do you get gruntled employees?
Sullivan advises employers to be proactive when it comes to retaining top performers. They may be the first to get competitive job offers as the economy strengthens.
“Don’t wait,” he says. “Have open and transparent conversations about the realities of the business to allay any fears any uncertainties.”
